MURDER TRIAL OPENS AT SESSIONS

Crown Unable To Find One Of Its Main Witnesses

Allegations that the accused shot Tsui Chok-sang, 47-year-old assistant manager of the Wing On In. surance Co., in an attempt to rob him and his wife, were made by the Crown when 29-year-old unemployed Tsai King-cheung faced trial on a charge of murder at the Criminal Sessions this morning before Mr Justice Gould and a jury of three women and four men.

Before the jury were called, the Crown applied for

an adjournment of the case to the next Sessions because one of the main witnesses could not be located.

The application was opposed by Mr Clifford and was refused by the Judge.

At least these were our thoughts last evening while, lamenting the inevitable destruction of much valuable property, we approached the burning ship "Fort William". The flames had possession of the vessel from the stem to the stern, and the mainmast was well on fire, Yet the between decks were filled with Jacks, a good lodgment was in a short time made on the forecastle, and the hoses from the engines alongside were effectually served without confusion or dis- order. Few, I believe, wore of opinion that the vessel could be rescued from total destruction, and as far as we could see she must have burnt to the water's edge, but for the sturdy conduct of our seamen, men, and officers; --of whom on such occasions, almost invariably, their country men are proud, and to whom, affer providence let every good man render thanks and honour. Perhaps it may not do the Friend of China harm with the Navy to make it the vehicle of some such reflections. Perhaps also it may not do harm to the masters of lying up ships to remind them, that it is not a bad thing to knock out
