Mr Winston Churchill tonight made the Anglo-Persian oil dispute a major issue in the British Government election campaign by accusing the Labour Government of "fleeing" from the oil Gelds.
Opening the Conservative election campaign, Mr Churchill alleged that the Government, in with- drawing British personnel from Abadan, had broken "solemn undertakings to Parliament."
- "But this is not now a living issue. There is no question of using force. We have fled from the field even before the parleys were completed."

from Abadan leaves the impression that Whitehall has capitulated in the oil dispute and that Dr Mossadegh has won all along the line. The latest decision compares shamefully with earlier "strong" statements made by the British Government to the effect that Britain would never abandon the Persian oil reineries; that Britons in Abadan must "stand firm?” that all steps necessary would be taken to pro- tect the safety and interests of British workers in Persin. It now transpires that these rallying declarations were nothing but bluff.
