Every football fan has said at some time; "Ah, the old team is not what it used to be." The voice may have been that of a supporter from some club not doing very well at the moment-Blackburn, Stoke, Coventry or Halifax, perhaps.

And, very often, they will say: "Well, football isn't what it was." We used to hear it in Preston when my own team were doing badly-especially in that season of 1948-49 when we were relegated fro.n the First Division. All those great Preston teams of the past, right back to the days of the Invincibles, were put up on pedestal as examples of what football used to be like.

But the yardrick by which the quality of football this year or any year is measured, is no on the strength of Blackburn, or Halifax in Stoke, Coventry any given month or season. Nor does the standard of football in wholly on the Britain depend

COACHING ESSENTIAL

There is more good football now, probably, than ever before. The reason goes beyond more Opportunities to play, the result of the five-day week in Industry; it comes from coaching.

Good coaching is disential in all sports and, although it may not be popular in rome quarters to praise the Football Associar tion, think they have done and are doing a magniligent job.
