Two Places To Fill In England's Soccer XI
London.
The first full International of the current soccer season is to be played at Highbury on Octobor 3 between England and France.
Already the Selectors have cast their not around to bring in all the likely confidates and very soon they can be expected to announce the England XL Among, those wilo have come under scrutiny are Tommy Lawton and Leon Leuty of Notta. County and Neil (Bogota) Franklin of Hull City,
I mention there, three players particularly because they occupy the positions which were least ratisfactorily filled in the English team last reason. Lawton will be remembered as one of the greatest English centre forwards, who renched his peak in the three seasons immediately after the war.
Franklin was the regular English contre-half until his vis!! to Begola, where he signed on for a South
club, two American years ago, and Leuty was the man, я that time, considered most likely to succeed him in the England! dcpm.
All three are now with Second Division sites and their England days, apparently behind them. This is a state of affairs that has caused the Seicctars no small amount of worry and which may yet have to bojaliered.

At centre-half were Chilton (Manchester United), Compton

There are ten races. The First Bell will be rung at 1.30 p.m. and the First Race will be run at 2.90 p.m.

At centre-forward Loc. (Derby), Mortensen (Blackpool), Eburn (Newcastle) and Loft- house (Bolton).
For none of them could it be salt that they had really colle factory games. Mirpurn managed four 'goals ̈ ́ ́ on ' his three op- pearances including the match against Portugal, won 3-2, anti Taylor did not allow an oppos ing centre-forward to score against him on the two occasions he was selected.
Now
to add to the dificulties has of the Selectors Milburn been out of the Newcastle side through injury for the last four games. It is thought that he will be playing again in a couple of weeks, but that may not be spon cnough to earn him a cap against France.
HUGHES OF LIVERPOOL
Personally 1 feel that the centre-half problem could be solved best by recalling Hughes of Liverpool who played for England in the World Cup games

the air he proved more than n master for Arsenal's Cliff Holton, who at something over six feet is no midget.
Unlike
far too many centre- halves these days, Hughes does 10: believe in breaking up an allack and, then belting the ball naphazardly down the field in he done that it will be picked ap by one of his own men,

At centre forward Jack Rowley of Manchester United is staking a strong claim. He did play for England two seasons ago and his feat of scoring a hat- Trick on each of the first three

THE WORLD OF RALING
AUSTRALIA NEEDS ESTABLISHED NATIVE LINES
By NIGEL GEE
Australian breeders auffer from a problem whfeld by noy is not new in this review of the world of anding tho absence of long-established native lines. Nor is the rout of the problem an exception; it lies, as in America and South Africa, with the quality of the imported stock -horses.
A-- A: suitable analogy would be the difference between an original painting and an engraving, For, many of the horses brought from Britnin to serve as stallions made fine reading as extracts from the stud book; they' might even be brothers or half-brothers of champlons, but they were not the real thing. In vory fow genera tions the quality weakens and is finally gone."
