The World's Best LIKE FISH

In Athletics

Best performances in the hurdles and fleld events in the world last year, as compiled by the Association of Track and Field Statisticians, do not show an appreciable improvement over previous years' beats, except for certain · Individual record-breaking performances,

The standard last year was exceptionally high in the Pole Vault, Shot Put, Discus Throw and Hammer Throw. The current season's performances suggest that in these four events and the High Jump the standard will probably be the highest in history in 1951. -

Last year's best performances a tabulated by D. . Pats and

SHORT LISTS FOR THE OLYMPIC CHAMPIONSHIPS AT HELSINKI NEXT YEAR

By "RECORDER"

The

Who will be the Olympic Champions in Helsinki next year? Potts-Quercetani list of best performances last year and the appended list of best performances so far this year gives a fair picture of who are likely to be in the finals.

Quite a few sporting and national magazines in 1948' carried the list of their selections of the Champions-to-be at London. Most were far out. Rarely taken into consideration were two important factors.

These two factors are consistency of performance and temperament. The fact "that athletes from the Southern Hemisphere did fairly well in London in 1948 suggests that the factor of long travel and out-of-seasonal appearance does not have the telling effect on performance that one would expect.
