Seeing Is Believing
HOW strange, and sad, and revealing,
that in sending a peace message to the
President Kremlin laat week Truman had to add, in effect: "Please tell the Russians." It is in the implied need for making such a request that lies the difference between atmosphere of the free world and life behind the Iron Curtain. To free peoples it is inconceivable that the head of one State should have to ask the head of another to release an assurance of friendship! Even were it regarded as a mere formality, in the democracies it would be given out as a matter of course and as automatically published without the interposition of any man's "Yea" or "Nay." It is one of the simple things which is meant by Freedom. Such reflections appear apt for today, when out of the blue there comes a new the Soviet publication, printed In English language in Moscow, and apparently dedicated to infusing a new- and happier spirit into Soviet-American relations.
