Well, if they are going to judge me on Test averages alone in Australia, then they are right. I failed.
But I wonder how many of them realised that I finished second in the tour batting averages. I got my runs in the wrong matches, that's all.
How did I feel about it? In Australia I must have been the most bitterly dis- uppointed and thwarted man in the whole world of cricket. I was putting 100 per cent. plus into everything and just drawing nothing out.
That is why I can face everyone, critics and friends alike, with complete con- fidence. I tried everything I knew, all the way along the line. No man can do more.
But I promise you this. ',
