IP KOON-HUNG GIVES A SPARKLING EXHIBITION OF HIGH-POWERED TENNIS

By "ARGONAUT"

Giving a sparkling exhibition of high-powered aggressive modern tennis, Ip Koorhung, the 30-year-old reigning champion, yes- terday defeated K. C. Dao in three straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 and 11-9, to retain his grasscourt title for the third year in succession and for the fourth time since the war,

Dao, conceding almost nine years to his younger opponent, resisted gallantly all the champion's offensive weapons for fully 110 minutes and his gameness in retrieving all possible shots made it possible for the huge crowd of spectators to see Ip at his best."

All the handicaps of a defensive player, however, when pitted against an aggressive opponent with even 70 percent accuracy in his strokes, were never 80 evident as in yesterday's final.

There wore a few occasions when Dao caught Ip in mid- court with short length sideline and crosscourt drives and with passing lobs, but these were negligible when compared to the number of points Ip gained with his all-out overhead smashes, sizzling deep crons flat racket backhand and forehand follow-up volleys.

Added to these, Ip's deceptive drops wrought havoc time and again on the soft court. The champion also held the advan-

tage of a foster first service and

If there was any department of the game in which Dao was superior it was perhaps in his ground strokes, which

were

more accurate than Ip's but not

as effective as the champion's deep low sizzling drives to both corners of the base when they get over.

THE PLAY

Dao started promisingly in the first set, taking the first two games and then going in to lend 4-1, as Ip indulged in base- line play and drop shots.

Reverting to his regular style of forcing play and follow-up shots, Ip broke through Dao's service, and took the next four games in a row for the first set at 6-4. The set took exactly 20 minutes.

The second sot was more or 1029 a repetition of the first, with Ip conceding the first two

games and then coming back to anter ave games in succession.

Bight errors on Ip's part on abled Dao to win the next two games and catch up to 4-5, but Dao failed to hold his service to concode the second set at 6-4 in 25 martes.
