When Ronald Charles Thomas Hockridge, 29, merchant, appeared on remand before Mr Latimer at Central this morning on a charge of possession of arms without a licence, he collapsed in Court during the proceedings when a further application for bail was opposed.

Another Air Disaster
[ONGKONG has distressingly suf- fered a second air disaster within
a month, underscoring yet again the difficulties which confront pilots who have to take their planes in and out of the Colony. The question naturally arises can anything more be provided in the way of navigational aids and meteorological information to reduce the hazards associated with flying in this part of the world? We believe Kai Tak airport is well equipped in this respect; that its control tower is efficiently manned and that mechanical aida measure fully up to international requirements. This suggests, there- fore, that the human element is a predominant factor in air crashes, whether they occur here or elsewhere. The loss of the Siamese Airways C47, with 16 people aboard, was not, so far as one can ascertain from the facts at present known, due to a mechanical defect. It appears to be established that the machine arrived on- schedule from Bangkok on Monday afternoon and was unable to come in because of weather conditions; that the pilot then headed, for, Formosa and was refused landing facilities there, also because of unfavourable weather; then he returned to Kongkong during the

Such' in- formation would appear to be an important safeguard for pilots who arrive here only to find they cannot land. If Kal Tak was able to give the necessary intelligence about weather conditions in Formosa then it would seem the pilot used his own discretion and judgment. On the other hand if Kai Tak did not possess that informa- tion, there are grounds for urging that the aviation authorities in Taiwan pay greater attention to this vital feature of aids to safe navigation.
