Universal Training Necessary
Washington, Apr. 8.
Mr Bernard Baruch told Congress today that uni- versal military training is absolutely indispensable for national defence and "pre- vention" of World War II.
"For the near futuro, the threat of war arises out of the terrible
gap between Soviet rearmament and our and the defences of our said Mr Baruch in a letter to the House Armed Services Com mitice chairman, Mr Carl Vinson (Democrat). "Until the gap is closed, the world will continue do hover on the brink of dis- aster."
Mr Baruch's letter was rem leased at Mr Vinson's suggestion. The House votes on Tuesday, on the draft UMT bill.. Mr Baruch
wrote:
for
think it is indispensable for the defence of our country and for possible prevention of third World War that the House cnact a bill providing universal military training. To put off action on universai training would increase the risk of war. It could tons priceless time we still need to take actions which might save peace." 1
He said he could not "whether Boviet leaders will choose to plunge the world into [(another' wir". but. "I know this peril ba lementd more swiftly and enduringly is, wo rebuild our military strength,"
