BOMB SECRET Self-Confessed Spy Gives Evidence For Prosecution
New York, Mar, 12.
A former employee testified today he gave an alleged Russian spy ring a description of an atom bomb that superseded the Hiroshima model: and that the ring also obtained information on a fabulous space ship.
David Greenglass, 29, himself a confessed spy, related the space project story just before the end of the day's surprise packed session of the nation's first atom bomb spy trial.
The defendants, Julius Rosenberg, 33, his wife Ethel, 35, and Morton Sobell,.33, are charged with conspiring to spy for Russia in wartime, An offence carrying a possible death nenalty.
Greenglass said Rosenberg told him ́he obtained information on what he called a sky platform project "from some of the boys," not otherwise identifled.

COMMENT OF THE DAY
THAT
United Press.
Question Of Guarantees
the State Department and the Department of Com- merce in Washington should be at variance over the United States trade. restrictions against Hongkong is a curious and possibly not insignificant development. Certainly it points up the ludicrousness of the embargo so cavalierly applied. The inference is that State Department officials can appreciate the merits of the arguments advanced on behalf of Hongkong by British representatives, while the Department of Commerce, jealous for its original action, is loth to concede any of the position it has adopted, no matter whether it be prejudicial to common Anglo-American interests. United States Cominerce and Defence officials
demanding guarantees from Britain that nothing in the way of raw materials and manufactured commodities, whether strategic otherwise shipped from America to Hongkong, shall find their way to Com- munist China. That, of course, requires that we should give an absolute undertaking that nothing is smuggled out of the Colony into the mainland— something just as incapable of fulfill- ment as a Washington: guarantee that there shall be no smuggling across the US-Canada border. confidently give one guarantee, and it should be sufficient to meet the wishes and fulfil the intentions of the Depart- ment of Commerce. The guarantee is that Hongkong will take every neces- sary and practicable action to prevent United States materials and commodities getting into Communist China. We fail to see what other assurances can be offered. It is inconceivable, for example, that Britain or Hongkong should be able to guarantee that American goods re-ex- ported to Southeast Asian countries shall not be re-exported from those countries to the China mainland. Yet that is one of the conditions the Depart- ment of Commerce would inflict on us. It is a proposition which automatically removes negotiations on the embargo from the realm of reality, Morcovor It is a manifestation of the unwilling- neas of certain American officials to credit either the Imperial or Hongkong governments with good faith and that is something we are entitled to resent. We are fully conscious of moral obligations and it is not
our wont- lightly to disregard promises given. We are prepared to give reasonable assurances and to carry them out to the letter. Washington officials cannot expect more than that.
Retreat Of The Communists
HE war news from Korea continues
T to be good and latest appearances
are that the United Nations offensive, will be limited more by the extent of tho. Communists' withdrawal than by headquarters planning. The difficult question posed is why, after the Reds had massed in certain strategical areas, giving all normal signs of preparing for ay counter-blow of some magnitude, they should suddenly change their minds and turn further north to the 88th Pártl6}" Is It a thotical withdrawal 7 A retreat to avoid the loss afsan--| irreplaceable army? Or a prelude to
political moves to bring about an end to hostilities? It is a perplexing situation and one which tantalises front line officers as much as lay observers. One thing, however, has become clear":" The Communists cannot, even by weight of numbers, achieve a decisive victory, and knowledge of this may now be influencing the Peking regimo towards the idea: of a; diplomatic and political solution. The UN Good Offices. Committee is still in existenco and there lo no lack of opportunity for its services to be utilised if Peking is so minded,
