Will Chinese Stop at 38th?

Contradictory Reports About

However, there. appears to be some good foundation for hope that Peking will respond to the appeal issued by 13 Asiatic countries for a cessation of hostilities in Korea. Associated Press, reporting Sir Bonegal Ran's denial that the Chinese had offered to stop at the 38th parallel added that a spokesman for the United States mission to the United Nations also stated that a check throughout diplomatic channels failed to re- veal any substantiation for the reported offer.

Commandos, Caught In Icy Death Trap, Fight On

For

Thirteen Hours

FROM BERNARD WICKSTEED

Kure, Japan, Dec. 10.

Some day a military historian will write the full story, of the British Marine Commandos trapped with American marines in the mountains of North Korea. The end cannot be written yet because 150 of the original 240 are still there. But here is the beginning of the story told to me by a couple of lads who have come back.

The Commandos were ordered to join the United States marines at Hagaruri, which is a pin point on the head of a map at the southern, end of Chosin reservoir.

They got as far as Kotori without much trouble. The following day, after

COMMENT OF THE DAY

The Prospects Of Peace THERE are a number of signs that

a

this will be a crucial week for the world, particularly so far as the pre- servation of peace and security is con- cerned. Koren dominates the thoughts of the man in the street just as much as it does those of international states- men. Can the Koren conflict be kept localised? Will the Chinese Com- munist armies be willing to stop at the 88th Parallel? Can satisfactory formula be found that will bring about the cessation of aggression in the Far Fast? These

pre- occupations, and if, on the one hand there are certain indications that all three querics may be answered to general satisfaction, there are also other disquieting signs. The present military situation in Kores and its political and diplomatic counterpart at Lake Success have to be treated as one problem. The United Nations cannot sit down with the representatives of the Peking government and discuss either a settlement of the Korea fasue, or any other Far East problems, malens Peking is willing to meet minimum require- ments and one minimum today is a halting of the Chinese Communist armies at the 88th Parallel 'and an immediate cease-fire. What are the hopeful signs for this being brought about? One is provided by the Truman- Attlee statement of last week which mado'a very clear offer to discuss an honourable peace in Kores. The state- -- ment was dignified and completely free :- of sabro-rattling. It renounced appcaso- ment, meaning any deal which sacrificed United Nations principles, and it emphasised the awareness of the United States and Britam' to the - Inherent dangers of the current inter- ti national situations particularly the role which Soviet Russia! Is Parion ba

stimulating strife and fear of strife. But so far as Communist China and Korea are concerned, the statement left the door wide open for a reciprocal conciliatory gesture on the part of Peking, and for this alone there is much to be thankful. In some respecta even more important has been the action of the Asian countries in seeking to persuade the Mao Tse-tung regime to stop its armies from trying to overrun the whole of Korea and instead to come to an amicable settlement that will enable peace to be restored to the un- happy country and to bring about its unification. If the "well-informed" reports from Washington and New York have any substantial basis it would seem that this appeal has had some effect in Peking. The Chinese Communists, it is said, demand equality of voice in any round-table discussions and it is difficult to see how they can be denied this. A much greater difficulty would be their insistence that problema other than Koren should be included on the agenda. This introduces complications which, at first sight, must bring about a clash on fundamental issues. Nevertheless, the most distur- bing factor still remains Soviet Russia. Will she goad Communist China into further military action that will pre- vent any chance of peaceful negotia tions? That Russia is uncompromisingly inimical to the United Nations over- Korca Mr Vyshinsky has repeatedly displayed during recent weeks, and it is the lovers which the Kremlin pulls from the fastness of Moscow which may yet become the determining factor in the immediato peace of the world.
