British ships, planes, tanks in cold storage

By JOHN STARR

which

Britain's "silent" military reserves--the ships never go to sca, the planes packed close in maintenance hangars, the long lines of tanks immobile in the field have been accumulating on a grand scale since the end of the war.

Are they being left to waste? Forgotten by authority? Deterio- rating to a point where they could not be used in a sudden emergency?

To answer these questions, 11 have investigated the position in each of the three services.

The navy The reserve fleet, now includ- ing four battleships, four alt- craft-carriers, ton cruisers, about 60 destroyers, 123 frigntes, and more than 30. submarines,,, has been put into "cold storage."

As each ship was taken out of service, it was scrubbed out and painted throughout. Thea light framework was erected over guns and delicate equipment. Över this was laid tape which, In turn, was sprayed with a plas- tic skin.

When the skin set, damp air was sucked out, and the whole cocoon sealed. Sometimes com- ship plete compartments of a were dehumidised,

Grey coats

While in reserve, ships are cared for by maintenance parties, and are regularly given fresh conta of weather-proof dark grey paint,

Warships in the "immediate readiness" reservo are regularly brought back into service, and ships on the active list put into

reserve.

It has been announced that the destroyers Verulam, Vigilant and Volage, which have been in re- serve at Portsmouth, are now to be converted into fast anti-sub- marine frigates.

representative example was the RAO.C. depot at Burn, near Selby, Yorkshire

disused aerodrome. Plainly visible from the surrounding road are the three-deep lines of tanks an estimated 2,000 of them which have been gathering there

since the end of the war.

"There is a big shortage of in- door storage accommodation and, 11 has been found that tanks keep better in the open than other

vehleles.

A security ban, here, on the numbers of aircraft kopt at storage unlis in different parts of the country. But a correspon- dent was given special facilities to inspect one typical unit of No. 41 Group In Shropshire.

Vampires, Hornets, Mosquitoes, and Devons (the military version of the Dove) make up most of the types kept here.

An R.A.F. wing-commander is in charge of the unit, Assisting him are nine RAF officers, mainly technical men, and a staff of 150 civilian employees.

Each aircraft is inspected every day, Every six months it has a major overhaul. And every twelve months it is taken up and test- flown by a Polish pilot,

-Passing through”

Some aircraft are sent to the unit straight from the factory --- all aircraft pass through such a pool before going to

a squadron some arrive because they aro not needed, temporarily or other- wise by their parent squadron, and some are brought for modi- Aication.

ATD

Guns are taken out of the air craft when they arrive. Cannons are boiled in grease, then pump- ed full of grease. In the case of piston aircraft, each cylinder is pumped full of oll; iets treated with kerosene.

Cockpit covers have special preservative, and all air intakes and vents arc covered with waterproof material and sealing tape.

The unit claims that any of these aircraft can be serviceable and flying within three days.
