Electric death for mussels, barnacles

La Jolla, California, September 3.

An electric shocking device which causes mussels and barnacles to commit suicida may some day save ship owners and seashore industrios millions of dollars a year.

He has already successfully tested it at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography here,

The apparatus is essentially a series of vacuum tubes which generale tined' electrical pulses in water. The pulses, too weak to electrocute, the sea creaturen, force them to suicidn.

In the case of the bi-valve mus- sels, the current causes their shells to snup shut. Continuing pulses cause à muscular reaction. which keeps them shut. Death occurs when the mussel either starves, or unable to eliminate wastes, succumbs to auto-intoxi- cation.

Within two weeks

In the Scripps tests all of a group of 100 mussels exposed to the pulses äled within two weeks. Seventy dled within one week.

The single-shelled barnacles, says Burkey, are equally vulner- ablo. They cal by fishing about in the water with tiny fecters. Preliminary tests Indicate that the pulses paralyse these feelers.

Power plants, oil refineries and other industrial plants near the occans use sea water for cooling machinery.

The huge pipes through whylch the water is drawn quickly becomes lined with clog- ging mussels.

A New England power station. Burkey says, removes 300 tons of shells annually from its intake lines. A San Diego plant with four by eight-foot Intake tunnels found after an inspection that the intake line was coated with two feet of mussels. This reduced its amount of saleable electricity by $25.000 yearly.

Systems using water hot enough to kill the bi-valves, or slaugh- tering them by heavy chlorina- tion, have proved to be extreme- ly costly, Burkey says.

to win more than hilltops

Washington, Saptombor 3.

Valiant American negro troops fighting under the United Nations flag in Korea are helping to win more than strategic hilltops in the struggle with Communism.

In the opinion of Washington psychological warfare experts they are also helping to win the battle against Communist propaganda: They are dramatic proof that the war to smosh Red aggression in Korea is not a "white man's wor."

This is an extremely important Broadly, therefore, the point for the non-Communist al munists are trying to drawn ilance, and one which will short-colour line in the struggle. ly be bolstered by the addition to Ú,N. forces of Asian troops. The Philippines kre sending 3,000 men and Thailand 4,000,

To understand why these forces are so important aside from the addidional milliary strength they

furnish, is necessary take n look at the aims and methods of Communist propaganda as it is now being laid down in a steady Peking barrage from Moscow, and Pyongyang.

The major aim of this pro- split the non- paganda is to

Communist world and particular ly to spilt off the nations of Asia from the Western powers,

In striving for this objective the Communists have used two major weapons (1) the claim that the UN forces in Korea aro really the tools of Yankee im- perialism and (2) the arguments of racism; that is that the White man's guns and bombs are once more slaughtering the people of Asta in a drive for new colonial oppressiona.
