Marform process :

economy in metal forming

The Glenn L. Martin Company has accopted the proposal by Hydropress Inc. of New York to manufacture and sell Martin Marform metal forming units, ....

The Marform process, makes possible the forming of metal parts from aluminium alloys, sheet steel and other metals into the most intricate shapes without recourse to expensive dies.

The new process was develop-have been attained. In testing ed by the Marlin engineers be. operations. cause metal forming by more Similarly, a cup depth equal to conventional procedures was cun- the radius is normally expected sidered too costly.

It was estimated that the new method would save the aircrat Industry alone some hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.

This is achieved by the sub- stantial increase in the rate of production of detalled parts and the considerable decrease In la bour and tooling costs, t

The operator can make com- plex slicet metal parts involving drawing, shrinking and stretching at the rate of 50 19 120 per hour. Higher press speeds and multiple tooling will increase this rate {proportionately.

the

The principal feature of process is the preelslon control of the pressure curve for the farming cycle of the part being manufactured. This control of the pressure enables the part to be formed free of wrinkles while at the same time, reducing springback to a minimum.

The Marform process has been designed to combing, the forming ability of the steel dle, with the ecznomical tooling of the Guerin process.

For example, the Marform process utilises the same simple male punch employed in the Guerin process but it also re- quires a flat plate on which the metal rests.

Pressure can be built up in the machine by the movement of the press before any forming of the metal takes place; in this way the tendency to wrinkle is prevented. Also eliminated process is the lack of selectivity of available pressures in the steel dla: the pressures can be varied infinitely and automatically in the stroke of the machine.

Successful test of locomotive

A six-day series of tests has been successfully completed by the Londoni, Midland Region of British Railways with loco- motive No. 44704, using the new No. 3 dynamometer car and the mobile testing..units.

The route used, was from Derby to Willesden and back, and the schedule was so arranged that the engine worked at: constant speeds of 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 00 m.p.h. for periods of half to one hour.

For each test different cut- ofa were employed, and the object was to produce charac- teristic curves of indicated and drawbar performance, as well of the upper limits of copacity at each spcode"

The indicating was effected by means of the: Farnborough indi- cator in the dynamometer car. Coal consumption was assessed using the special tender and weighed bags af-coal, great care being taken to equalise the thick- ness of fire on the grate at the beginning, and end of the tests. Water was measured by incans of u woter meter.
