"Lost" American battalion breaks encirclement
PLANES, ARTILLERY POUND REDS
Tokyo, July 10.
The heaviest American air and artillery bombardment of the Korean war stalled the Communist invaders today only 28 miles from Tacjon.
At the same time the "lost" American infantry battalion fought its way out of encirclement by North Korean forces 10 times its number near Chonan, eight miles behind the Red lines.
American guns and planes battered the advancing enemy tank and in- fantry columns to a standstill at Chonui, 28 miles North of the South Korean provisional capital of Taejon.
A jubilant spokesman at the advance American headquar- ters in Karre called the air- artillery action the first real American victory of the war.
lie estimated that a battalion at Communist tanks and part of n North Korean regiment were caught by the rain of American shells, rockets, bombs aud ma- chine gun bullets. The spokes- man said: "You would be safe in saying that the major part of the tanks and Infantry had been wined out."
General MacArthur reported In his afternoon communique that 36 tanks, 135 trucks and two locomotives were destroyed or damaged by Americun bombers and Öghters, alone.
The Air Force communique put the number defpitely at 39 tanks. 69 trucks, one locomotive, nine box cars, two half-tracks, five jeeps and two large guns. Another 13 tanks, 19 trucks and a locomotive were damaged. There was no Immediate explanation of the discrepancy between the two communiques,
Front despatches sald American 135 mm. howitzers, booming into action for the first time, account- ed for at least Ave others tanks' and possibly most of an 11-tanic formation.
