North Koreans advance within 50 miles of Taejon
HEAVY CASUALTIES REPORTED
Tokyo, July 6.
North Korean armour hurled American troops Southward in a general retreat that carried them to within 50 miles of Taejon, the provisional capital of South Korea. Massed North Korean forces of some 50,000 men and more than 100 tanks had shoved the Americans Southward more than 25 miles from their high water mark at the gates of Suwon.
A despatch just before midnight from the United States headquarters in Korea disclosed that the Yanks and South Koreans had given up the defence line they sought on the South bank of the river flowing along. side Communist captured Pyongtack, 29 miles South of Suwon.

Washington, July 6.
·General, MacArthur's Headquarters has advised the Pentagon that the situation of American ground forces in Korea "is not considered serious in any way." An Army spokesman, telling of the MacArthur advices, denied vigorously that an American infantry outpost was "wiped out" by North Korean tank-led forces.
Tokyo advised the Pentagon, the spokesman said, that the outpost had withdrawn behind strong dofansive positions and that losses were "very moderate.”
The attack on the outport was made in force by on undetermined number of Korean troops and betwoon 40 and 50 tanks.
"The withdrawal of the outpost," the spokesman said "Hollowed approved tactical procedures and in no rospect was the outpost wiped out."
In Tokyo, General MacArthur's Headquarters an- nounced tonight that rocket-firing F-80 jot plones destroyed eight tanks and live trucks of the invading North Korean forces pushing Southward from Suwon.
Headquarters said a flight of B-26 bombers dostroyed 40 trucks during today's action. American field sources pictured the action the heaviest yot of the war. Associated Press,
