Every spring in America, when the birds and bees

The siren call brings them to the baseball parks and the sand lots where the thud of a ball against a mitt, the sharp crack of horsehide meeting ash and the hoarse cries of the um- pire combine to make baseball America's favourite national pastime.

All about murder

Rating:★

Miss Barbara Stanwyck, who upon a time did quite a good job as a comedienne, has, in the recent past, fancied herself more and mare a character actress. In "Thelma Jordon," starting today at the Lee, Miss Stanwyck again tries her hand. as at a "deep" part, and the result is quite gratifying.

This time she is a girl who pretends to be a high-toned type but is really a naughty retired gambling hall hostess and the playmate of a thug, Although Miss Stanwyck, as she conducts herself here, is transparently not up to any social standards more taxing than those of a cabaret girl she convinces a young dis- frlet attorney she happens upon that she is strictly from the "right side of the track" and presently he is making plans to abandon his wife and children and rush into the Bunset with her.

Before the lovers can take off, though, Miss Stanwyck is locked up on suspicion of murdering an old lady with whom she has been living.

a

At this point, "Thelma Jordon“ plunges into all kinds of legal carryings on, with the

young district attorney, still drooling ever Miss Stanwyck, making hash of the state's case against her. This gets him nowhere professionally, and doesn't do Miss Stanwyck much good, elther.

And the ending, therefore, Is rather morbid,
