As the emphasis on all exhibits at the Festival of Britain's ex- hibitions will be on quality, so also it is hoped that the souvenirs to be sold will be themselves examples of the best design and manufacture. To achieve this standard manufacturers are being asked to submit their ideas for souvenirs to the Council of In- dustrial Design, who have set up a committee to scrutinise the de- signs. Those passing the test will recetve a "certificate of accept- unce,"
For their guidance, souvenirs are defined as "any portable or- ticle commemorative of the Fes- tival". This covers a wide range of products, from the traditional type of souvenir such as bijou Jewellery or ornaments for the mantelshelf to toys and games, toilet articles, small leather goods, dress accessories, houac, hold articles and so on. Many will be useful as well as decora- tive.
Designers may choose their own way of linking their product with the Festival. Articles may simply bear the date "1951" or the words "Festival of Britain Souvenir" or "Edinburgh 1951";
Manufacturers are assured that the samples or prototypes which they submit for inclusion in the Council of Industrial Design's 1951 Stock List of Souvenirs will be treated as strictly confidential and not divulged to any competi-
tor.
Launching of Britain's latest tanker

This tanker, the largest yet to be built in Europe, le the first of four similar vessels, primarily designed for carrying arude oil from the Middle East to Shell's United Kingdom rafineries at Bholl Haven, Essex, and Stanlow, Cheshire. Plature shows crowds lining the river bank to watch Velutina afloat.
