American personnel buy British
On the roads in the North of England these days there may be seen many new ex port models, not on their way to the ports but in the hands of lucky local owners who have ordered them perhaps only a week or two previous-

The answer lies in the existence. of the extensive United States Air Force base near Warrington, Lanes, and the operations of the Ameriam services' Post Exchange | through which the U.S. personnel enn acquire British cars at the British basic price (less Purchase Tax), paid in dollars.
The scheme started up early in November, and within two months 93 vehicles had been delivered, and still they come.
They are strictly expert designs, with left-hand drive, and the buyers have to sign a document that they will not resell the cars
Britain, so that normally they will take them back to the States. British Road Fund Beencen have, of course, to be taken out for all such cars, and the owners vely upon the aormal baste ration which is bought at the elvillan petrol stations,
Supplementary rations are ae- quired in just the saine way as, by the ordinary British motorist.
"When I went to see what was doing at Burtonwood," writes a special correspondent, "I found that the favourite type was the Morris Minor, export models of which had been acquired by over 40 of the purchasers concerned.
"I also encountered owners of Ford Anglios, og well as A40 and A00 Austins, while I believe that umong other makes favoured have been the Vanguard and the M.G. "One Morris Minor owner, who the States runs an Oldsmobile, told me that with his new car he often drove at 55-00 m.p.h, and had completed some 1,700 miles in his two months' ownership Agreeing that the Minor was snappy enough, he praised it for fuel economy, for His case of parking and for its being 'One for the wife to drive,"

The new 1950 Oldsmobile "88"
Comfort, power stressed in new Oldsmobile
By Our Motoring Editor
The argument as to which is the bottor car, the British or the American, has been going on for years despite the fact that there can be no compartion when units of two different categories are involved.
So, perhaps for many more years to come, the driver of a British small car will swear by his vehicle, while the owner of the large Ameri- can limousine will frown on the smallness of a 12-horsepower car.
This provides high power out- put, with less tendency for de- tonation,
