Comedy fare now showing at the Roxy, Broadway

Rating:

Mr. Preston Sturges, that sympathetic satirist of sacred conventions, has often bèon described as Hollywood's most explosive one-man film outfit. Those who saw his "Miracle of Mor gon's Creek" will readily agree. Now, cinema-goers have a chance to view Writer- Director-Producer Sturges latest effort with the screening of "The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend" at the Roxy and Broadway Theatres.

Starring Betty Grable, the film is a running gun battle between sex and slapstick, with the latter utually emerging the winner. Betty Grable fans, in fact, will find plenty of cause to complain, as their favourite gal gives only two rather fleeting leg shows.

The Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend is, on the whole, enjoyable dim fare, mainly be cause Mr. Sturges has successfully taken advantage of the plot's stronger points.

Despite Cameron's and Sheriff Johnny Mack Brown's efforts to stop the stampede, the cattle are all killed, while Brown 18-wound- cd. Rod then discovers Curtis making another attempt to blow up the dam and kills him.

He then decides that the settling of the land is inevitable and that there has been too much killing already, so he blows up the dam himself and, with Gale's encour- agement, decides to start all over

Realistic war film starting today

Rating:

What is up to now the best war picture to be filmed --the first down-to-earth story of the GI of World War II, sans flag-waving and mock heroics—is opening today at the Queen's and Alhambra Theatres. The name is "Bottle- ground." Taking the members of a squad in the 101st Air- borne Division as the pivotal characters, "Bat- tleground" gives the audience the laughs, the tears, the bravery, the cowardice, the griping, the bantering, the boredom and the guts of a cross-section of American GI's.

In the fateful December of 1944 this squad of mud-stained, weary, battle-scarred soldiers is awaken- ed from reports of crumpled Nazi resistance and dreams of Paris furloughs to find itself once again on the move to make a stond against the Krauts at a French town called Bastogne.

And here we get a close-up of some of these bedraggled "Scream- ing Eagles"Holley (Van John- son), carefree six-footer with a weakness for gals, gugs and pur- Joined

On one side of the Big Sandy River, in West Virginia, lived the Hatfields, a family of dark-haired, saturnine taineers ruled with an iron hand by "Devil Anse," father of the clan. Across the border, in Kentucky, their blood en- emies, the McCoys, headed by Old Randall, farmed theli modest land.

The above clucidation, taken from any American history book, Is the basis for "Roseanna Mac- Coy," which stars Joan Evans and Farley Granger at the King's Theatre.
