BAO DAI CLAIMS DESERTIONS FROM VIETMINH FORCES
RUSSIAN INTEREST
IN ASIA
Moscow, March 3. The Russians have always been interested in Asia and South East Asian affairs.
Nevertheless, it seems fair_to. say that despite this continuing interest in Aziz, the chief atten- tion of most Russians in the field of international affairs WAL directed at Europe.
Now this has changed. The Soviet newspapers have not by any means decreased their
thorough coverage of what goes on in the United States and Wes- tem Europe. On the contrary, this coverage has continued.
But the prominent place in foreign affairs pages is now de- voted to news despatches from China,
Indonesia, Japan, India and other Eastern nations.
(Editor's note. The following is the first interview given by Bao Dai, ruler of French-sponsored› Vjetnam, to an Amer», ican newspaperman 'since Fieinam came officially into being lute in January.) : .

Bao Dal gave no estimate of the number of peasants and fighters going over, to his side.
Bao Dal viewed this as a heal. thy reaction that clearly shows the real feeling of the Vietnam- ese people toward foreign-in- the traditional values.

Bao Dal described the Vlot- minh Republic as an empire of fear. It could not last long in face of results achieved by the Vietnam Government, he said. The 35-year-old French edu- per second in cated monarch made his predic- tion Ja reply to a questionnaire submitted four days ago.
Writ- ten answers were handed this correspondent during an inter- wlew which was the first granted by Bao Dal to an American IC porter since Vietnam officially came into being late in January.
The Interview took place Bao Dai's Dalat Palace, a dernist country house bullt with granite blocks and furnished in Western style.
There were Vietnamese guarda about, but 1 appeared to overflow with secret poller of the French Surete and both French and Vietnamese guards,
