Death of U.S. Naval Attache in Rumania

The mutilated body of Captain Eugene F. Karpe, American Naval Attache in Rumania, was found in a railway tunnoj near Salzburg yes- terday and reliable United States Army sources said he appeared to have boon slain. Captain Karpe, 50, was a close friend of Mr. Robert Vogeler, American businessman who was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment by a Budopest court last Tuesday on spy charges.

LABOUR HAS WON THE NECK AND NECK ELECTION RACE, REUTER REPORTED IN A BULLETIN, FROM LONDON ISSUED AT 3 A.M. HONG KONG TIME TODAY.
London, February 24. Labour's overnight lead of 60 was reduced this afternoon. It fluctuated from minute to minute, above or below that figure until a stage was reached when the Conservatives drew up rapidly.
At one point a stream of Conservative succossos cut the Labour, lead, par- coptibly the Labour advantage dropping by 21 in barely two hours. The Liberals advanced from.nne seat to six. Their suc- cessful candidates included Mr. Clement Davies, the Party's leader.
Labour is jubilant about the rout of the Communist candi- dates-100 strong.
Mr. Arthur Deakin, powerful trade union leader and member of the Trades Union Congress, suld that the Com- munists hd been "true to their tradition of being the fifth column in the Labour movement."
Mr. Konni Zilliacus, most prominent of all the left-wing' Labour rebels, lost his seat at 'Gateshead, polling only 5,001; voles against official Labour's 15,249.
