POLICE ATTACKED
FULLY-ARMED POLICE DETACHMENTS AVERT, ED A DISTURBANCE OF SERIOUS PROPOR- TIONS IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD OF THE RUSSELL STREET TRAMWAY DEPOT LAST NIGHT WHEN HUNDREDS OF WORKERS CLIMAXED THEIR DISPUTE WITH THE TRAMWAY MANAGEMENT IN AN OUT- BREAK OF VIOLENCE.
Steel-helmeted police squads dispersed threatening crowds by the use of tear gas bombs as the tramway workers, backed by several hundred sympathisers, hurled stories, rocks and empty. bottles at the police who were guarding the approaches to the depot.
The demonstration marked a dramatic stage in the month-old dispute between the tramway man- agement and the workers who are demanding a $3 a day increase in pay.
Only alert action in dispers- Ing the crowds prevented the riot from deteriorating into a major clash between the police and workers.

ATTEMPT TO BREAK TRAMWAY DEADLOCK Service may be resumed by Chinese New Year
Mr. Ko Chouk-hung, Chairman of the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce, accompanied by Mr. H. Y. Te'o, the General Secretary, and Mr. Y. K. Mok, barrister-at-law, `wore lock- od in conference with the management of the Hong Kong Tramway Limited for more than an hour yesterday.
The object of the conference was to attempt to break the present tramway deadlock, and not to mediate in the dispute between the work- ers and the management, Mr. Ko Cheuk-hung told the Press.
Mr. Ko said his colleagues of the Chamber and he called on the Tramway managemen! not as representatives of the
Chamber, but purely in their private personal capacity.
They, like thousands of other members of the public, were an- service xious to ace the tram restored.

Mr. Ko said he the conference, was unable to make any state- ment but, personally speaking, he was hopeful that the tram service might be resumed before the Chinese New Year.
He would not say whether fur ther conferences would be held with the Tramway management, but admitted that he was in touch with both the workers and the management, and would continue his efforts until the deadlock was [broken.
Efforts to contact the manage- ment on the outcome of the dis- cussions were not successful.
Today ends the fifth week of the tramway lock-out. None of the locked-out workers have drawn pay.
