PLAIDS

LONDON gives a welcome

10 the new Paris plaids which will be worn in the untun. In deliciously mited, often quite dark shades they break right

away from the conventional tartans as we know them and havU abuccaneering dash of their own.

I have seen coats, sulta, dresses and, of course, atoles in these new exciting shades. I was particularly struck up the emphasis on the grape theme with the rich velvety purple ted of a inuscat used with the soft green of a vine leaf, and by

Suits in these plaids are sleek and figure-fitting with high-buttoning Jackets (and a favourite collar is the face-traming petal).

Experiment With Food

In these days of enlightenment and science, we know for more about the correct diet for children than was known a generation or so ago—and we have more trouble getting our children to cat.

There is no doubt about it, children in our grand- parents' day may not have had such a carefully chosen and prepared meal presented to them but they did eat what was put in front of them, and apparently enjoyed it, too.

We are so sure we know what is best for the child in the matter of diet at least, but do we? Animals seem to know what food they need and when, so why not children?

Some years ago a child expert in the United States conducted a very interesting experiment

For the first few days the child- ron dived into any dish at ran- dom, sometimes sampling nearly every dish at a single meal, but after a time they settled down and a definite, deliberate and in- dividual pattern was shown by each child.

She divided the newly-weaned children (about one year old) in an institution into two groups.

Tips For Buying Towels

(By DORIS DENISON)

Towels have come to be an im- portant decoration feature in the bathroom, and when you buy new ones, colour and design should be enrefully considered along with good wearing qualities.

Colour scheme possibilities aro almost unlimited, but here are a few suggestions:

I

against

1. Deep blue towels light blue walls. White or red

DionogramTE.

2. Dark green towels with light green border against Ught green walls.

3. Yellow towels with a sculp- tured Boral pattern against aqua walls,

4. Pink towels against gray walls.

5. Maroon towels against pole yellow walls.

6. Any colour can be used with white walls, but strong colours are best.

7. Use white towels as a fresh accent along with coloured 10- wels, ог as a contrasting note against, a deep-toned wall. A co- loured monogram or coloured horder will help to tie white to- wels in to your colour scheme.

Good Quality

Towels must stand up under and hard repeated washings wear, so always select ones of good quality. A towel which goes to pieces in a short time is never a bargain.

Here are some points to look for next time you shop for terry towels They are indications of good quality and long service.

1. The underweave should be firm and closely woven. This is the baste structure of the towel which holds the loops, and you can see it best near the bem or in the border where there are no loops. Hold the towel up to the light. It should shine through in tiny pin points. If light shows through unevenly, if means that Use underweave is too loosely Woven.

2. The loops should be thick and close together for greatest absorbency.

3. Hems should be sewn with small stitches and securely fas tened at the corners.

Care

Launder towels frequently, be- fore they become badly soiled. Don't iron them. Shake them out and fold smoothly.

It was found, that children in the experimental group, while not necessarily balancing their diet at a single mical or even for a day or so, over a longer period of a week or a month managed to feed

Wouldn't it be worth while to try something of the same sort. in our own homes? To à certain extent at any rate we can allow our children a choice of food. If a child "goes off" a certain food or demands the same thing meal after meal, it may be wiser to give him his head for a while.

There are several points, how- ever, about which we must be careful. An older child who has already developed strong disliken and an emotional attitude to mealtimes generally may not be able to adjust himsell to freedom of choice in this way, and his diet may be very unbalanced for weeks

Therefore, if such a course is contemplated it should be started before the child is two years.

The cholce should be "Imited, of course, to foods which aro sultabio to the child's

age. Stimulants, such as tea and cof- fco, highly seasoned foods and very fatty, fried foods, should not be included in the child's range of choice.
