REASONS FOR SUPERIORITY
By H. S. LINFIELD
The world over the name Rolls-Royco stands for the best car made. The acceptance of this claim is reasonably past disputo, but to anyone whò tokes more than an ordinary in- terest in cars bold acctp- tance of the axiom is not satisfying. He wants to know what it is which has placed the car in this pro- eminent position over the years.
Апу reasonably thoughtful mulorist, asked to justify the famous phrase "the best enr in the work applied to the Rolls. Royce, would probably say that it had been earned by sheer quality both of materials and of workmanship, and by the silence of running that has been synony- mous with R-R. behaviour since the days long before World War when the first 40-50 h.p. Sliver Chost showed that cur could be powerful yet quiet, and withal rellable, at a ilme when re- linbility could by no means be

was designed and built by Mr. Buck in his workshop, together with the car, the model taking some three years of patient work. The horizontal engine drives the two rear wheels direct, ignition current being provided, not by the usual miniature coll and bat- tery, but by a magneto,
As usual, the power unit has a carburettor consisting of one jet,
which the capacity Dí
can be varled by a needle valve, and a simple tank from which the fuel, usually a form of "quid dy- namite," Methanol plus castor oil, is drawn, there being no float chamber mechanism.
This is one of the really suc- cessful British 10 cc, engines, a type that has reached a higher state of development in the U.S.A. Uhon in England,
Forward, the axle is in two parts, each swinging on a central. axis pln against coil springs and dampers, to provide independent suspension, and the whole is mounted in a shell which forms the under-pan of the car.
Brackets Attached
To this shell are attached the brackets necessary for D
yoke, because the method of running these cars is to attach them by a cable to a
central pivot so that they career round a circular course, usually for so many laps to a quarter of a mile.
It says scenething for the design that Mr. Buck's car was timed at 8.0 seconds for the quarter-mile -more than 101.12 mph. the machine being the first British model to reach this speed,
Total weight of the car is 0% ourkes.
The second car was designed and bullt by Mr. E. Rogova, who operates in a
very well-known model shop at 36, High Street, Weybridge, in Surrey, and who is a very likeable character.
His machine Is model of John Cobb's famous land speed record car. The engine is a Hornet 60 of 10 cc, placed in the under- screen horizontally and driving the front wheels through
spur gearing.
On the driving gear shaft is a' pulley which enables the engine to be started by a leather thong, and bekind is the fuel tank,
The rear wheels have "knife- edge" tyres, the front being of ordinary shape, and they are In- flated with a cycle pump (some of these tyres aro inflated with a hypodermic syringe).
This model weighs 8lb Gaz, and is intended to reach at least 100 m.ph.
The chassis, also by Rogers, is for a scale model of the Cooper 500, all the more realistic for having a single-cylinder vertical engine which, in this case, is a McCoy 20 of 4.99 c.c.
