BRITONS IN SHANGHAI ALL SAFE

Shanghai, May 27.

The 3,000 British community emerged from a fort night's battle of Shanghai with comparativa. ly small proporty damage and' no casualties. Reuter learned this today in an exclusive inter view with the British Consul-General, Mr. R W. Urquhart, who revealed that some British river craft were requisitioned by the National- ist authorities, over British protests, to trans- port troops, but all these had now been re- covered, including a Shell Oil tanker, down the Yangtse River by the destroyer, HMS Hart. It appears that virtually all, the British property damage was suffered in the Western suburb of Hungjao, where the Nationalists carried out wide- spread demolitions in prepar- ing for the defence of the city. Mr. Urquhart sald that protests were lodged against this destruc tion and a record kept of the des froyed properties. "We are count ing our blessings rather than our losses at the moment," in view of the considerable damage that might have cccurred, he added,

"The modoration and control on both sides were remarkable,.
