VOLUNTARY SERVICE
If you wish to help the Colony in an emergency you can do one of four things
ENROL in a combatant unit of the Hong Kong Defence Force.
ENROL in the Essential Services Wing of the Hong Kong Defence Force.
ENROL in the Special Constabulary.
OFFER to help when the emergency occurs.
the
If you can decide now, it is preferable, both in your own interests and in those of the Colony that you should ENRHOL You will have the advantages of be- ing a member of а
and recognised service
Government will be able to plan for and count on our individual help when this is needed. You will naturally be required to undergo training if you choose to enrol in a combatant unit of the Hong Kong Defence Force or in the Special Constabulary. But if you enrol in the Essential Services Wing you will not be required to do training though you will be able to train If you wish to do so.
If you are not able to commit yourself at present beyond a general offer to help in an emergency you are urged to make this offer now, You will incur no obligation by doing this ant correspondingly the benefits of belonging to a recognised service will cover only those who have actually enrolled; nevertheless, offers of service made now are very valu- able to the Government because they will establish the number of people ather than those enrolled whose general assistance can be counted on if an emergency arises,
4
Those who wish to enrol In a combatant unit of the Hong Kong Defence Force or in its Essential Services Wing, should call at the H.Q. Hong Kong Defence Force, Lower Albert Rond, where all enquiries will be answered, Those who alect for the Special Con- stabulary should call at 1st floor, Central Police Station.
Those who are able only to offer their services are asked to complete a form of which a copy. is printed and to send it to the Colonial Secretariat. These forms may be obtained either from the Public Relations (Office, H.Q. Hong Kong Defence Force or from the Colonial Secretariat. The notes printed on the form will make it clear that signing the forms involves no more than a general offer to help and that those who do,se will not be forced into a type of job for which they consider themselves unsuited. They may, ‚of course, be asked to hold themselves in readiness to undertake some particular work when an emergency occurs, and if they agree to do this, it will be. open to them to enrol when- ever they wish to do so. Or they may simply be listed as a strategic reserve of helpers to whom the Government can turn when more workers are needed than those which the recog- nise services can provide.
