COMMUNISTS' LEADER Asks For Moderation In Demands To Nationalists EFFORT TO SAVE TALKS

Nanking, April 8.

The Acting President, General Li Tsung-jen, last night sent a tele- gram to the Communist leader, Mao Tse-tung, appealing for co-operation between the Communists and Nationalists in view of the present difficult international situation.

In a personal appeal to Mao for moderation of the Red "unconditional surrender" demands, President Li stressed the urgency for co-opera- tion between the two parties "especially in view of the darkening in- ternational situation."

Trying to avoid collapse of the peace talks, President Li offered to take responsibility and punishment for any "historical mistakes” made by the Nationalist Government likely to affect the negotiations. He told the Heds he is will• } "I will accept without evasion | ing to be burned in mid- or dis.
