Announcing a total estimated revenue in the financial year just ended of $184,000,000 and estimated expenditure of $160,000,000-a probable surplus of $24,000,000-the Finan- cial Secretary, Mr. C.G.S. Follows, yesterday introduced the Colony's Budget for 1949/50.
This provides for revenue estimated at $180,019,370 and estimated expen- diture of $179,586,970. Adjustments will reduce the surplus to below the anticipated figure of $432,400.
Mr. Follows announced increased taxation in the form of a doubled duty on gorated waters, increased local postal rates (from five to 10 cents for letters, and from two to five cents for postcards), an increase in tho stamp duty on choques and receipts from 10 to 15 cents, a $1 stamp for applications for import and export licenses, and a license fee for certain manufactures.
Though the keynote of the Budget, in Mr. Follows' words, is security-
