THOMA PNEUMATIC VACUUM CLEANING
IMPROVES SPINNING
IT has been repeatedly pointed out in every in- vestigation into the working condition of the cotton industry that the greater proportion of the operatives' time is wasted in piecing-up broken ends at ring frames, collecting the flying ends, removing the roller laps which these broken ends leave on the under-clearers, removing the "fly" or waste as a result of endsdown, and generally cleaning up.
In an effort to obviate this loss of time, it has been the standard practice on ring spinning 'frames to have revolving top clearers and revolving under-clearers above and below the drafting rollers, the object being, of course, to attract and "catch up" the loose flying roving before it has chance to become a menace to the ad- jacent ends still unbroken. .
is perforated in such a way that there is a hole ioented immediate- ly beneath the point of delivery of each roving (Fig. 2)
ໂຕ. the Thoma system of pneumatic
cleaning. vacuum under-clearers are done away with and in their place is filled
patient scavenger sucti pipe rumming the length of the frame and beneath the bottom metallic rollers.
This pipe is clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 and 2. and attention is drown to the fact that the pipe

Advantages
1. Considerable saving of raw material as the fibers accumulated In the warto .container are ready for rework,
2. Improved quality through great reduction of
ends-down and elimination of doubles.
!
8. Essential incrasse of efficiency and still greater
increase of spindle sailgament per operator.
4. Elimination of sorvengar roll and roller lapa,
hence great saving of steel and top rella.
5. Spinning-wasto opener unnecessary as waste
is collected ready for re-LED.
6. Improvement of air condition through the sucking away of much ty and purifying of air in Miter box.

When end breakage necurs the suction hole in the pipo Im- muriately captures and the float- ing roving and sucks it way to o central air pussage located immer diately on the centre-line of the frame under the ercel. All the scavenger suction pipes are led into one central extract ale duel, from where the roving passes in- fo alter box Bited at the end of the ring frame (Fig. 3), or as an alternative, from each ring frame Into a central station separator of patented design.
In individual frame units," one fun with its compunton motor and drive is incorporated, or alterna- tively, in some instances, it may be preferred with the drive up from the cylinder or tin roller existing on the frame.
The great advantages claim- ed for the Thoma system by the makers are labour-saving, greater efficiency and Improv ad working conditions, thus re. suiting in the ability of, sach spinner operative to mind a greatly increased number of ring spindles.
In addition, there is the great saving in raw material itself, be- cause the fires which necumulate in the killer box are all loose, un- twisted cofion being reduced back felo the Sbre stage.
Unquestionably, there is a dis- tinct improvement in the general condition of the room through "fly" being constantly removed from the ring frames,- whilst the cuttingcut of the seavenger cleur- ers and roller laps leads to mach higher efficiency and the saving of leather rollers,

Miners Freeze The Earth
By Michael Grant
Mining engineers are freezing a column of the earth's crust to a depth of 412 fest near the village of Calverton, Notting- hamshire, England, in preparation for a new pit, which will open up a virgin coalfield with an estimated output of a mil. Bon tone a year for the next century.
OUS
The new colliery shaft will pass through a stratum of por. sandstone. which forms à great underground reservoir
town providing Nottingham and surrounding
with their
water.
Freezing will seat off the water, which would other. wise flood into the shaft during excavation at a rate of some 1,000 gallons a minute.
First it was necessary to sink 25 pipos, In a circle, around the proposed shaft and through the sandstone. Brine, cooled circulated to 37 degrees below freezing point, is now being through the plpos, in two months' tima a tong oylinder of Ice will have boon formed, within which the shaft alekors will
and get to work. There are three compressors, condenadra, water-cooling tower in the refrigeration plant.
*
Headstocks 130 feet high and a 1,750 horse-power electric winding plant both to be used in the excavation, will have boon installed by the time the les barrier has been completed. The finished shaft will be lined with Iran tubing and com- crete.

Reception Plus
Several times in the history of radio It has seemed that reception had reached such a high standard that little or no improvement was possible, and then, suddenly, patient and per- sistent research has been rewarded; another advance has been made and we have once again had to revise our standard of radio values.

The Mullard 9-value, 12 wave- band Bandspread "Double Super" has, obviously a very big future. There is no doubt at all that the special double superheterodyne circuit, together with its double performance features, will soon make it famous throughout the world for all round perform- ance, quality at reception, volume and tone.
