Eardley Testifies
In Hotel Rates Case
Further evidence in the summons against the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels, Ltd., was heard before Mr. Hin-thing Lo yesterday. Evidence was given by Mr. P. J. Eardley, Competent Quartering Authority, who claimed the protet- tion of the court in regard to answers to ques- tions put to him by Mr. H, G. Sheldon, defèrice counsel.
Mr. P. A. Hooton, assisted by Inspector J. Moore, prosecuted, while Mr. II. G. Sheldon, KC, instructed by Mr. R. A. Wade son, defended.
Mr. Eardley said that he was the Competent Authority mp- pointed under the Price Control in 1940 and ceased to become such after the return of Mr. Pattison. He was still in the department.
On June 4, 5 and 6 he sent out piretilar letters to 91 hotels on the island and mainland requesting information relative to plons and the various Tales charged by hotels, This was done in response to orders from the Colonal Seere- tariat 'o Ax fair rates.
