Marshall Aid Needed To Save Pound Dollar Reserves Down To

London, July 5.
The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Stafford Cripps, solemnly-
warned the House of Commons today that Britain needs Marshall aid to save the pound sterling. Even with the first instalment of Marshall funds, he said" that Britain ran down its gold and dollar reserves by £232,000,000 in- the first six months of this year. Sir Stafford Cripps said;.“Including the actual ERP receipts, our reserves stand at the moment at £473,000,000." He said the Government hopes to maintain its, reserves with ERP assistance at about £500,000,000. But if the dollar and world prices continue to soar, the position will be difficult.
He said: "It is possible that with good harvests and the absence of adverse conditions of the last year or two in the way of drought, wo may see some reduction in world prices and also in theTM exceptionally high prices we had lately to pay for certain raw materials.

On the requirements laid down a condition of the bilateral agreements, Sir Stafford said: "Some people have suggested that these requirements are un-| reasonable. I ask them for a moment to

"The citizens of the Unitod Sintes are taking a step unex- ampled in world history to give vast quantities of conde for which they have to pay.
