ELECTIONS" OVER
Gottwald Government Gains Its "Victory" Secrecy Of Ballot Destroyed
Prague, May 30.
A victory for the Communist-dominated” National Front was a foregone conclusion tonight as the counting began after daylong voting in Czechoslovakia's first general election since the change of regime in February. Results from one-fifth of the administrative dis- tricts in the Czech lands showed 11 per cent against the National Front, and 89 per cent in favour. The Government support was higher in the industrial and urban districts. But in some small villages, blank ("Opposition) vot- ing papers reached 50 per cent.

In nine wards, the number of voters who returned blank forms one percent, und in was under another nine the proportion was under 10 per cent.
Two villages produced more than 20 per cent of the blank votes.
The polling was "half secret" since many voters ignored the screens and voted in vlow of election officiala In 2010 booths, screens were so placed that there could be no secret votes.
The blank votes were the only means voters had of registering opposition to the National Front single list, which represents the Government of the Communist Premier, M. Klement Gottwald.

INDIA'S STERLING
BALANCES Important Talks Opening
London, May 30.
Talks on India's sterling balances, computed to be in the region of £1,200 million, will begin in London on an expert level tomorrow. large and distinguished delegation, consisting of the greatest financial brains in the Govern- ment of India, has arrived in London, headed by the Indian Finance Minister, Mr. R. K. Shanmukhan Chetty, and the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Sir Chintaman D. Deshmukh.

From 12 Prague districts, the Government obtained 04.847 against 5,781 blank votes.
Hopes Destroyed The only point to be determin ed by the count is how many voters returned the blank paper. A widespread luck of facilities for the secret vote destroyed any Opposition hopes of a show-of-
strength
Branded in advance as traitors who would "lead the nation back to Munich," the Opposition were given few chances to vote in secrecy and therefore in safety, In very few places could blank vote be cast without be ing seen by election committees, made up of Communist Action Committee nominees.
But the Indian delegation will be meeting the Prime Minister, Mr. Clement Attlee, and mem- bers of the Cabinet Informally within the next few days.
