Announcing a total revenue in the financial year just closing of over $150,000,000 and a probable surplus of över $30,000,000, the Hon. C.G.S. Follows yesterday introduced the Colony's Budget for 1948-49, providing for expenditure estimated ot $149,000,000 and revenue estimated at roughly $150,847,900, and an anticipated surplus of $1,842,943. The Financial Secretary, cautioning against excessive optimism, disclosed that no increases of taxation have been provided this year, but must be expected next year, that the Budget surplus is fortuitously derived. from the fact that $10,000,000 arrears under the "Income Tax" legislà- tion will be collected in the coming financial year instead of this year, and that the total cost of Government by way of personal emoluments is now over $64,500,000, sixty per cent, of which goes to pay Govern- ment employees in the lower grades.

The threatened strike of walters and boys of the Hong Kong Hotel, Peninsula Hotal, Repulse Bay Hotel and Lido materialised at about noon yesterday when the workers walked out without any demonstration or disorder.^-
Their action caused considerable inconvenience as the Hong Kong Hotel had been engaged for two wedding receptions, a reception by the Un- official Justices of the Peace to Lord Listowel' and a concert by the French Society of Arts and Literature.
The two wedding receptions wore held. Members of the hand, hotel clerks and the guests themselves,asalsted with the serving. The reception to Lord Listowel was transferred to the Hong Kong, Club Annexe while the concert was cancelled.
