The Constituent Assembly last night approved a constitution for the Republic of Italy, thus formally ending the reign of the House of Savoy.
The vote, which marked the conclusion of 17 months of work on the charter, was 453 to 62, with most of the monarchists and Nationalists casting negative ballots.
