CHINA PROTESTS TO RUSSIA
Nanking, June 11. China has instructed her Ambassador in Moscow to lodge protests with both the Soviet Union and the Republic of Outer Mongolia over the Invasion of Chinese territory, which is "no ordinary frontier incident," Dr. Chang Yuan- chang, Director of the Foreign Ministry's pub- licity and intelligence department, told a press conference this afternoon.
Dr. Chang admitted that the Chinsee Government considers that the Soviet Union bears in part the responsibility for the attacks launched at Peitashan, in eastern Sinkiang. He declined to reveal what form the Chinese believe this responsibility takes, nor would he comment on the contents of the notes to be sent in pro- test.

Hovels
(By "Selina")
The present desperate housing situation in Hong Kong and Kowloon has resulted in thousands of people electing to take up their abode in partly demolished premises or In hovels built amid the ruins of bombed out or looted houses, fully aware of the fact that death or injury may be their lot any moment as a result of a collapse:
The tenants of these premises are not being per- mitted to occupy their "apartments" free of charge. They are called upon, in the majority of cases, to pay a most exorbitant monthly rental.
Enquiries by the "China Mail" show that a monthly ren- tal of $30 in demanded from each family occupying, not more than bed-space in a party de- molished house, Monthly reu- tals, ranging from $15 to $40. are charged for hut spaces at the fout of retaining walls.
An inspection carried out by the "Chion Mail" over a large ares revealed thht in most of these partly-demolished pre- nines, several familica teach of nt least five or six members) are hudlied together under the maar uisgusting and revolting "surroundings.
or
The premises are completely lacking in woodwork, windows doors. The tenants huve themselves rigged up pieces of lety cluth, gunny lags, canvas är malting to ensure a little privacy as well as protection from the elements. In certain 43408. atairways to the upper storeys are non-existent and the tenants have to make their way up and down by means of make shift and rickety ladders.
In the case of premises where only the walls have been left standing, small huts, bulle of wood, sheets of tin, bricks and oven cardboard, have been' erected around the bases of the walia.
In other enges, hovels have "been erected on the top-of rub- ble nnd wreckage which have not heen cleared away.
Gorilla Mauls His Keeper
Philadelphia. June 10.
The City Zoo'n massive 100- pound gorilla, "Bamboo." went on a rampago today for the second time in six weeks and seriously mailed ä keeper who sought to lead him from an out- door enclosure to his cage.
The huge animal turned ou his attendant, Sampel Gunata, 64, and mauled him for severni minutes before the keeper's cries brought help.
Physicians at the Presby- terian Hospital said Gunata's scalp was nearly torn off and he suffered fractures in both arms. The gorilla released his grip on Gunata only after aix other attendants came to the man's aid with streams of water, which forced the surly beast back into his cage.
In Bamboo's other attack, he scooped up n keeper, Ralph Davis, in the same enclosure. Thon, as the panic-stricken Davis screamed for help, tho gorilla bounced his head along the ground, attempting to us- cape into the Zon propor. Davis suffered severe scalp lacerations and shock.-United Press,
