RENTS MEASURE AMENDMENTS

Two important amendments to the Landlord & Tenant Ordinance, 1947, are contained in the report of the Standing Law Committee in- structed to examine the Blll after its second reading. The Report was laid on the table by the_Attorney-General at yesterday's meeting of the Legislative Council,

Both these amendments concern the application of the Ordinance. To claim exemption under Clause 3 (1) (c), the premises must now have been "continuously untenanted" since August 16th, 1945, and the expense incurred by the landlord in rendering them inhabitable "must now amount to not less than the equivalent of the standard rent of the premises for "seven years"-not one year, as originally proposed. The Standing Law Committee considered that the exceptions from the application of Ordinative were too wide that it, in fact, went beyond the intentions and recommenda- tions of the Tenancy Commit-
