Unorthodox Games In Chess Tourney
(By Recorder)
a
The first round of the tournament for the cham- ·
pionship of the Kowloon Chess Club, played at the Peninsula Hotel on Tuesday night, saw dramatic departure from all chess convention and habit common to Hong Kong. There wasn't an orthodox game on any of the four boards and the round was concluded shortly after eight o'clock, not without surprising, results.
The first game to finish unw J. V. Tousz resign in less than 30 moves after a broken pawn for- mation following an unorthodox development to a Centre Counter game against S. Novikov. The latter player had the black pieces, white going down in defeat on every board before the evening
was over.
The surprise of the evening came a few minutes later when Karel Weiss resigned on the 19th move against V. V. Kolatchoft. Developing a wide open King's Bishop's Gambit designed to de. velop a devastating queen and bishop attack before his opponent could consolidate a sound defence, Welsa was net with continuni exchanges cramping-the- slaught.
