CHINESE CURRENCY CRISIS LOOTING COLONY'S TAXATION

"Adequate Measures" To Be Taken

Dealings Banned

Nanking, Feb. 12. The Minister of Information, Mr. Peng Hsueh-pei, though declining to give a detailed comment, told a press conference today that the Govern- ment will take “adequate measures" to control China's wildly fluctuating exchange market. He called the currency fluctuations "symptoms of a deep-rooted disease, resulting from eight years of Japanese aggression and two years of ever-increasing Communist destruction." Peng said that the Chinese people must not delude themselves by thinking that the situation can be remedied through changing the name of the Chinese currency and adjusting the ex- change rate or customs tariffs.

Peug said at the Govern ment was confident that it can cope with the present crisis. "Adequate measures are being taken and will be taken,"

To Follow Pre- War Model

Government is not finally committed to specifiè

assessment scales for Income Tax in Hong Kong, the "China Mail" learned yesterday from trustworthy sources, though recommen- dations have been put forward and the details are under discussion.

The proposals envisage direct taxation which is not true Income Tax, but follows very much the lines of the provisions of the War Taxation Ordinance, including Salaries Tax, Corpora- tions Profits Tax, etc.
