area of research, given the above mentioned differences and variation within ethnic groups. Previous sections of this paper have discussed variation within the Teochiu population, and the difficulties involved in generalizing about the nature of Teochiu ethnic identity. Another important source of variation is generational differences in the importance ascribed to an ethnic identity in a changing society. The study of these kinds of variation will provide insight into intergroup dynamics in Chinese—here more specifically Hong Kong Chinese—society, and contribute to the comparative study of ethnicity.
