Government Agrees With Committee Recommendations
New Legislation To Be Introduced
In view of the greatly increased cost of mainten- ance and the repair of buildings, the Govern- ment of Hong Kong considers that a general increase of rents is justifiable and that such Increase should be limited, in the case of dwell- ing houses, up to 30 per cent over the 1941 level, and in the case of business premises up to 45 per cent, it was announced yesterday afternoon. No rent increase is lawful, how- ever, until legislation is approved. GERMAN MAYORS' URGENT APPEAL
Hamburg, Nov. 17
The mayors of larger towns in the British and United States zones of Germany meeting at Stuttgart, have sent an urgent appeal to the Allied Occupation authorities "not to let the German people perish in famine and misery." The mayors urged the Allied authorities to review the economic life by stopping coal exports from Germany, by importing food and raw materials and by granting relief credits. They also urged the Govern. ments of German provinces to do all in their power to allevi- ate their plight.
