The four fast cargo ships each 9,200 tons gross, which are being built for the P & O Far East- ern trade, are to be named "Soudan," "Somali," "Surat” and “Shillong." As already announced two will have diesel and two steam propulsion and their 13,000 horsepower will give them a speed of eighteen knots. Carrying 10,750 tons deadweight they will have also 100,000 cu. ft. of refrigerated space; there will be accommodation for twelve passengers.

Of the names chosen that of Surat is the oldest in P. & 0. history.
