RIOTS FLARE UP AGAIN Many Killed In Bombay Disturbances
Trouble Spreads To Quetta
Bombay, Sept. 2.
Forty-seven were killed and 200 injured in riots which flared up here today after crowds had paraded through the streets carrying banners. The police opened fire three times and a tram and a house were burned, but tonight the Bom- bay Government announced that "all was quiet in the city everywhere at 8 p.m." Trouble broke out when Moslem League suppor- ters displayed the black flags which they had been asked to show to demonstrate their "silent contempt" of the Indian Interim Gov- ernment, which is to take office today under the chairmanship of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, President of the Congress Party. Violence broke eat around a Hindu temple and at one point five wore killed in a pitched battle between Mierlem and non- Moslem demonstraters,

Mr. Patel complimented the police on their handling of the situa- tion and "doing their best to stop trouble spreading."
News of the disturbances had sprend rapidly through the city and Sunday crowds at seaside, or in cinemas, hurried home. Notices warning audiences that "riots had broken out in cer- tain parts of the city" insorted in the middle of cine- ma #how, which came to an abrupt end.
