NO GAMBLES WITH BREAD Plan For
Government's Decision On Rationing
Lively Scene In Commons Debate
London, July 4.
Mr. John Strachey, Minister of Food, pounding the ancient dispatch box in the House of Com- mons and raising his voice to a shout, declared today that the Government-- would not risk gambling with the people's bread, and was determined to start rationing of that commo- dity on July 21, as planned.
Mr. Strachey disclosed hitherto secret facts about Britain's supply of wheat, spoke in moderate- ly optimistic tones about the world wheat pro- spects for the coming crop year and appealed to the United States to aid in maintaining the ration of the British Zone of Germany, lest chaos result from a breakdown.
