BECAUSE HONG KONG'S RICE ALLOCATION FOR THE SECOND QUARTER OF 1946 WAS ORIGINALLY CUT BY 50 PER CENT. AND HAS SINCE BEEN CUT A FURTHER 40 PER CENT. THROUGH LACK OF AVAIL- ABLE SUPPLIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, THE COLONY'S RICE RATION HAS TO BE FURTHER REDUCED.
IT WAS OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT. AS FROM THE NEXT RATION PERIOD, REGISTERED CONSUMERS WILL RECEIVE 11 CATTIES OF RICE AND I CATTY OF FLOUR TO BE SPREAD OVER A 10-DAY PERIOD.
Existing rations are 1.3/4 | ter of 1946 (April, May and culties of rice and half a catty June) at 40,000 tons. of flour.
It will be seen that to offset the cut in rice, the flour ration has been increased.
Thus, in quantity of cereals and in food value, no hardship is imposed with the new rations,

This was strongly placed be fore the Combined Food Board in Washington by the Colonial Of- that fice, which pointed out Hong Kong had to depend en- tirely on imported rice, and was therefore not in auch a good position as other places which had local rescurces on which to fall.
