GAVE LIFE IN RAID RESCUE
The posthumous award of the George Cross to a member of the Home Guard who "showed the highest form of cool cour- age and self-sacrifice for others" is announced by the War Office.
The Home Guard' Section Cmdr. [Sergeant] George Walter Inwood, was called upon by the police to assist in rescue duty dur- ing an intense air-raid in Birm- ingham, in October.
Taking charge of a party of six volunteers, he found that several people were imprisoned in a cel- lar filled with gas. A small hole was made and Section Cmdr. In- wood was lowered into the cavity. He managed to rescue two men, and although nearly exhausted entered the cavity a third time and was overcome by the fumes. He was dragged out by one of his comrades, but it was impos- sible to revive him.
The
been George Medal has awarded to Capt. (temp. Maj.)
G. B. Matthews, the Dorsetshire Regt.. for his resourcefulness and courage. When four wounded men were left marooned after an ex- minefield surrounded plosion in
by unexploded mines and mutilat- ed bodies, Maj. Matthews placed planks over the barbed wire en- the field tanglements enclosing
and so reached the survivors and assisted them to safety.
