The "Daily Express" reports that light units of the Soviet Arctic Fleet have landed more than 1,000 men behind the German lines in the Petsamo area where they destroyed fuel, food and ammunition depots and a meteoro- logical station.

The Russian landing party is reported to be now engaged with the Germans. Interna- tional News Service.

COTTON FIRE IN SHANGHAI

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL") Timely efforts by the Shanghai Fire Brigade prevented the des- truction of $1,500,000 worth of Japanese-owned cotton stored in the godowns of the Central China Cotton Association in Shanghai.

Although the godowns are in Chapel, Chinese territory, the Municipal fire brigades turned out and did brilliant work in stopping the conflagration with- out serious loss. - International | News Service.
