Accused was an Ariny dunce committee president and organis- ing M.C. at a camp
gymnasium ending at midnight-to dance which civilians were invited.
It was alleged he tried to in- duce an M.T. driver, in the early morning, to drive some people, in- cluding women, back into town after being told it was "against orders."
Women By Fire
·
The driver had been detailed with his truck to bring beer and other "stuff" to the dance and the back to take the remains sergeants' mess. Accused
Lance- was seen by Corporal J. Thomas, of the camp police. He was told that all civi- lians were forbidden to remain in the camp after a quarter of an hour of the dance finishing.
Later, it was stated, Thomas was rushed out of the hut after he had seen several women sitting by the fire, taken under open arrest to the guardroom and accused of being drunk by Williams, who did not press the charge when the re- gimental sergeant-major and the medical officer could not be found. Thomas, declaring he had only had tea to drink on. that day, said he was, on a midnight patrol of the camp.
Accused declared that when some women guests were strand-. ed they were waiting for a taxi when the incident happened. Thomas was arrested because he was insulting, improperly dress- ed, in a drunken state, and had entered the sergeants' mess with- out removing his cap or armlet badge.
The hearing was adjourned.
