NO QUESTION OF ANY BARTER AGREEMENT WITH JAPAN
THERE IS NO QUESTION of entering into any barter agreement between Great Bri- tain and Japan, or of any unfreezing of Jap- anese assets, it was again stated in authoris- ed quarters in London yesterday.
The banking machinery set up between the Bank of England and the Yokohama Specie Bank will provide for trading licences to be granted in exceptional circumstances.
Each licence will be on its own merits from the British supply point of view, and in each case supply considerations will be! weighed against considerations of! economic warfare.
It is pointed out in London that it would be wrong to regard the setting up of machinery for issuing trade licences as an essay in appeasement.
The arrangement reached be- tween the Bank of England and the Yokohama Specie Bank does not represent any retreat from the situation as set out by Mr. Eden in the House of Commons.
